A recorded voice in an IVR reads out ten digits and asks the caller, driving or standing in a queue, to catch every one of them. Reading a WhatsApp number out loud and asking someone to remember it puts the entire handoff on the customer, and most calls never make it from that instruction to an actual WhatsApp message.
What the Customer Actually Has to Do
Offering a WhatsApp number in an IVR script feels like a convenience. In practice it asks the caller to do several things in a row, most of them after they have already hung up and stopped paying attention: catch the number, write it down, save the contact, open WhatsApp, and start a conversation from scratch.
Most people don't finish that sequence. That isn't a technology problem. It's the plain fact that nobody wants to take dictation from a recorded voice while they're driving or standing in a queue.
Ask for the Number Instead of Reading One Out
The fix is to flip which side does the work. Instead of reading a number aloud, the IVR asks the caller for their own WhatsApp number: say or type it, followed by a hash. That's the only thing the caller has to do on the call itself.

What Happens After the Caller Hangs Up
Before the phone is back in the caller's pocket, the business is already messaging them on WhatsApp, from its own number, opening a live thread. Nothing was written down, no contact was saved, no app was opened cold, and no conversation started from scratch.
The call didn't hand off to a separate channel the customer has to independently pick back up. It continued, just in text instead of voice.
Why Most Handoff Tools Guess Instead of Ask
The wider category treats voice-to-WhatsApp as a bridging problem: a market of connectors whose job is linking two already-separate systems together after the fact. A common approach is inferring the caller's number from caller ID rather than asking for it directly.
